The people behind the brownies

Some businesses start with a business plan. Ours started with a brownie.

Eddie has spent most of his working life in hospitality — managing Pizza Express in York, running a pizza catering company at weddings and events like the Great Yorkshire Show, and somewhere along the way developing a mild obsession with first impressions. He'll tell you — usually with a completely straight face — that you only get one chance to make them. He's told the staff this approximately four hundred times. They know.

Single origin

In 2013, that obsession found a home. The first Curious Coffee shop opened just off The Green in Easingwold — a proper neighbourhood café built on good coffee, good food, and the belief that every detail matters. From day one, every hot drink came with a little chunk of homemade brownie on the side. Customers kept asking if they could buy more. We kept saying yes.

Great Taste

Those brownies quietly won a Great Taste Award. We forgot to enter the following year, and then discovered they make you pay to enter, so that was the end of that. Eddie's a true Yorkshireman.

When the world shut down in March 2020, we did what any sensible hospitality veteran would do in a global pandemic — we started delivering brownies out of the back of a car. All around York and North Yorkshire at first, then further, then everywhere. What started as a way to survive became something we couldn't stop. Curious Brownie Co. was officially born, and nationwide delivery followed shortly after.

Dessert delivered

We've since opened a second coffee shop in Haxby, and the brownies now travel to every corner of the UK. Eddie still does the occasional pizza pop-up at the cafés, because old habits die hard and the dough doesn't make itself.

It's a bit of a 'Royal we' — we actually mean Eddie, his wife Jenny, their kids Harry and Millie, the brilliant teams across both coffee shops and the hardworking bakers at the bakery, who somehow make it all work. It's a family business in the truest sense of the word. We just happen to also send brownies in the post to strangers.
